TL;DR

Both are browser app builders for people who don’t write code, and both get the same three complaints: price, a wall once the app grows, and a backend you have to secure yourself. In 45 Reddit threads that judge both, Bolt came out mostly negative in 27 and Lovable in 19, and Lovable was mostly positive in 7 against Bolt’s 4. When a thread picked one of the two, it picked Lovable. Bolt’s specific pain is tokens running out on bigger projects; its specific praise is speed for something quick. Few people pick either for the long run: 7 threads in this set end up recommending Claude Code instead.

I’m Denys, a full-stack and AI engineer, and I spend a lot of time on apps that started in tools like these. I haven’t run a fair test of both, so this comparison comes from what paying users write about them, counted and quoted.

How I read the threads

I pulled every thread from r/lovable, r/boltnewbuilders, r/vibecoding, r/Base44, r/cursor, r/nocode and r/SaaS that matched searches like “bolt”, “lovable”, “tokens” or “switched” between November 2025 and October 2026 and had at least four comments, from the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit data. Of 710 threads, 445 contain a real opinion about at least one tool; 45 judge both Lovable and Bolt. For each thread I recorded the tone toward each tool, the reasons, any move between tools, and one quote. Every quote below appears word for word in the archived thread, and I opened each quoted thread on Reddit before publishing to check it’s still there.

The sample leans toward Lovable’s community: r/lovable has far more threads than r/boltnewbuilders. Bolt still drew more negative verdicts, but read the numbers as a direction.

What 45 threads say about each tool

How 45 threads judged each tool. Threads that discuss both. Reddit, 11.2025 to 10.2026. Lovable: mostly positive: 7; Lovable: mixed: 19; Lovable: mostly negative: 19; Bolt: mostly positive: 4; Bolt: mixed: 14; Bolt: mostly negative: 27.
Figure 1. 45 Reddit threads that judge both Lovable and Bolt, November 2025 to October 2026, by the overall tone toward each tool. My count, 31 October 2026.

Neither tool is loved here. Lovable splits evenly between mixed and negative; Bolt leans clearly negative. In threads that preferred one of the two, the pick was Lovable, and the only moves people describe between them go from Bolt to Lovable: “Began with Bolt. Eventually moved to Lovable.”

Most threads didn’t pick either. 20 of 45 compare the tools without a winner, and 7 conclude that an agent on your own repo is the better path.

What each tool gets criticized for

What each tool gets criticized for. Same 45 threads. One thread can name several reasons. Bolt: hits a wall on bigger apps: 11; Bolt: tokens and price: 8; Bolt: security: 7; Bolt: fix loops and regressions: 6; Lovable: credits and price: 14; Lovable: backend and database: 10; Lovable: security: 9; Lovable: hits a wall on bigger apps: 9.
Figure 2. The most frequent criticism in the same 45 threads. A thread counts once per reason and tool.

Bolt: tokens and a wall on bigger apps. Bolt bills in tokens, and the complaint is that bigger projects eat them fast: “As soon as the project size increases Bolt keeps saying Ran out of tokens, Ran out of tokens….” A free-tier user: “i created a free account and wrote one prompt and replied to questions asked and got nothing before the tokens ran out.” Across all 60 threads that judge Bolt, tokens and price come up in 32%, the wall on bigger apps in 22%, fix loops in 17%.

Lovable: credits and the backend. Lovable’s version of the same complaint is credits, 14 threads here. Its second one is specific to Lovable: the backend. With Lovable Cloud, the database and the users live in Lovable’s backend, and getting them out later is the hard part, 10 threads. Connecting your own Supabase project instead of Cloud from the start keeps that exit open.

Security, both. 7 threads criticize Bolt and 9 Lovable for security, almost always the same thing: tables in the database that anyone with the public key can read, because row level security was off or a policy checked nothing. That isn’t a Bolt or a Lovable bug, it’s what the generated backend looks like until someone tests it. My Lovable app security checklist applies to a Bolt app on Supabase just as well.

What each tool is praised for

Bolt’s praise is speed on something small: 8 of the 45 threads credit it with getting a first version running fast, and that is most of its praise here. Lovable’s praise is the same plus the design and the context it keeps: a developer who tried v0 and Bolt first wrote “Then I tried Lovable and gosh this tool turned me from Full stack developer to Full Vibe Coder.”

Which one should you use?

  • A quick prototype or a demo for one meetingEither works. Bolt is praised for speed on small things; watch the token counter.
  • A real app you'll keep changingLovable, per these threads. Connect your own Supabase project and GitHub from day one, so you can leave.
  • You're stuck in fix loops in eitherMost people in that spot move the repo to a coding agent rather than to the other builder.

Questions people ask

Is Bolt cheaper than Lovable? It depends on the size of the project. Bolt’s tokens go further on small things; on bigger projects the threads report running out fast. Neither is cheap if each fix takes several attempts.

Can I move a Bolt project to Lovable, or the other way? Both can push the code to GitHub, and from there any tool can open it. The backend is the part to plan: export the database and users, and set the secrets again.

What do people use instead of both? In this set, a coding agent on the exported repo. Where they go and why is in Lovable alternatives: where 66 Reddit users went, and the same comparison for the editor route is Lovable vs Cursor. The third builder, Base44, is in Lovable vs Base44.

Is a Bolt or Lovable app secure enough to launch? Only after someone checks the database access. My free Supabase security checker reads a project’s grants and policies without reading your data, and Is Supabase secure? explains what the platform covers and what it leaves to you.
